Preferred Habitat

Breeds in moorlands, marshes and around lakes or inlets. Winter is spent in estuaries, marshes or flooded areas.

Widespread distributions with summers and breeding in northern Europe and Asia and winters in southern Europe and temperate Asia

Food

This is the ancestor of the domesticated goose from around 3,000 years ago. Feed on grass and agricultural crops with some small animals taken.

Field Notes:

The greylag goose has become an invasive species in several areas. In the Orkney islands the population has increased from 300 breeding pairs to over 70,000. Due to extensive damage caused to crops, the hunting season for the greylag goose has been increased to almost year round.
