Nests in freshwater lakes otherwise will winter on sheltered coastal waters.

Distribution and Range

Breeds in far north of North American and around Bering Straits and then winters south on Pacifc coasts along US and Asia. Also winters along Atlantic coast of US down to Gulf of Mexico

Food

In salt water dives for crustaceans and molluscs and in fresh water eats insects, fish eggs and rarely vegetation.
