Arizona, New Mexico and Sierra madre Occidental of western Mexico

Food

Forages in oak trees by tapping and probing in search of insects, especially larvae, also some berries.

Field Notes:

A pair of birds starts on their nest cavity by mid winter. Both parents feed nestlings. Used to be considered a sub species of the Strickland's woodpecker but recently given species status.
